Fix Stinks
Ammonia build up
Cloth nappies only smell if the wee is not being washed out of them properly. This is characterised by an ammonia smell when baby wees in a clean nappy (not a dirty one). It`s easily fixed. Go through the checklist below to identify what is amiss, strip the nappies (also easy and safe) and correct the routine.
Wash routine checklist
1. Is the machine ¾ full? Not more or less. Nappies need agitation to get clean.
2. Are you using a detergent on our list?
3. Is the machine cycle on the cotton / longest (2 hour cycle).
4. Are the nappies being rinsed in the machine before the main cycle?
5. Are night nappies being prewashed in the machine the day they come off the bum? If the nappy is only hand rinsed and left in a basket, the chances of build up are quite high. See our wash page on how to wash night nappies.
6. Do you have hard water? Nappies must be washed at 40`C if hard water is present. Powder detergent must be used and 10% more than the recommended amount. Never wash our covers on 40`C. You can add the covers to clothes below 30`C.
7. Too much detergent can lead to "soap build up" which causes stinks. The way to assess this is to watch the machine on the last rinse/spin- there should not be any bubbles. Wash the load again with no detergent. Again watch for bubbles. Continue to wash the nappies (no soap) until all bubbles have disappeared (this can take as many as 3 x machine cycles). Strip them and correct the detergent amount going forward.

How to Strip Safely
Stripping nappies is a safe process. Strip nappies, boosters, wipes and liners. Not covers.
You can either use chemical bleach or an Oxygen bleach. If the ammonia build up is a lot and has been left too long, we suggest the chemical bleach route.
Chemical bleach method
Dosage
1 cup bleach for a full bath / machine (30 nappies).
1/2 cup bleach for a 1/2 full bath / machine (15 nappies).
1/4 cup bleach for a 1/4 full bath (under 10 nappies suggest doing the bath method).
Stripping in the bath
Add enough cold tap water to cover the nappies.
Dilute the bleach in a jug of water first, then mix into the bath water before adding nappies. Add nappies and mix well.
Keep nappies in the bath for 30min, and maximum time of 45 minutes. Mix around a few times during this time.
Follow with a warm (30 degrees), short wash (add detergent, no softener) in the machine to break down the bleach. This step must be done. The wash has to be warm.
In the machine
Add the bleach to a litre of water in a jug and mix. Add this to your detergent drawer once the machine has filled up with water.
Run a cold, one hour wash.
Run a longer, warm wash (30 degrees), (add detergent) to make sure bleach rinses out. This wash must be warm, not cold. Add warm water to your machine if need be.
Oxygen Bleach Method
Strip nappies, boosters, wipes and liners. Not covers.
Oxygen bleach is a 100% natural product. We recommend using either the Roodt Bio bubbles or the Nurturer O2 bleach (50g - 100g per strip)
Bath method Nurturer O2 bleach:
Leave the nappies soaking in a bath of cold tap water with the product, for 2 - 3 hours.
Add to the machine and wash for 1.5 hours, with detergent on 40 degrees.
In the machine Nurturer O2 bleach :
Add 50 - 100 grams Oxygen bleach to the detergent tray. Put it on a normal wash cycle.
Stop the machine to allow for the soak part about 15 minutes in.
Do a normal long warm wash (40 degrees) with detergent.
More than one treatment may be needed if ammonia build up is severe. Oxygen bleach is a natural product. If nappies still smell after the treatment, consider doing the chemical bleach strip.

Treating a Rash
Babies do get rashes from time to time but cloth nappies are usually not the cause. If there is a rash, check below to see the cause and find the solution.
A rash between bum cheeks is not related to nappies.
Thrush
This is bright red and consists of small, red like spots between bum cheeks and around private areas. It is very persistent and does not go away. It is very common in babies under a year old and easily treated. Please consult a chemist/nurse to get the over the counter, anti fungal cream. Treat for at least 2 weeks.
Cloth nappies can only be used through thrush if you use a special detergent that kills the fungal spores each wash. Bamboo Superwash can be bought online.
Strip nappies, wipes and liners (not covers) immediately.
Thrush spores hang onto cloth nappy fibres (not nappy covers) and if continued, will reinfect.
If you don`t opt for the Superwash, use disposables until all spots have cleared 100%.
Wet wipe rash
This rash mirrors the bum wipe - between the cheeks. It`s red and raw looking. Store bought wet wipes are often full of nasties regardless of how "natural" they claim to be.
Switch to the Wipey reusable cloth wipe/ face cloths. The rash will go away within a day.
Wet nappy rash
Wetness rash can occur if the nappy is too wet. It is usually a light pink, blotchy looking rash that appears only on the areas where the nappy touches (not between the bum cheeks). It's usually on the front of the lower tummy. A wetness rash is often caused by a night nappy that got too wet then it constantly reappears.
How wet is too wet?
Is the entire nappy saturated? No dry patches? This is often an indication that the nappy needs more layers to distribute the wetness and is likely the cause of the red rash. A damp nappy should feel like a wrung out face cloth and there is usually a dry patch of around 20% at the back.
A wetness rash can often start from a night nappy that is just far too wet. The rash is then aggravated during the day. Dawn patrol fitted nappies cannot be used for one night stretch. Only Siesta night nappies or two medium or two large flats folded together can be used for the entire night, once baby is old enough, usually 10 - 12 weeks old.
Wet elastic rash/welts/red lines
This appears as red like welts where the elastics of the nappy / cover sit, usually inner thighs. This means the nappy is not coping (is too wet) and needs more absorption or changed sooner. We find this generally is caused by night time nappies that get too wet or pocket type nappies.
Solutions
Boost nappies
You may need 2 - 3 boosters during certain stages, especially in Winter.
Add a fleece liner which creates a stay dry effect on the bum. This will only work if the nappy has enough absorption to cope, otherwise the wetness will seep through.
(Dry) Maizena powder rubbed between the bum cheeks is a wonderful solution and works very well and is cloth safe. Place a changing mat under the baby to prevent mess.
Teething rash (not nappy related)
This rash appears when teeth emerge. It`s between the cheeks, red and raw.
Solutions
Keep nappies as dry as possible. Change regularly and add extra boosters until the rash gets better.
Use fleece liners to protect the nappy if using chemical based creams. We have found creams don`t actually help much.
(Dry) maizena powder rubbed on the bum is a wonderful solution, works very well and is cloth safe. The powder dries it out. Place a changing mat under baby to prevent mess. Apply at every change until better.

Fixing Leaks
If you have a leak here or there, this happens but if it`s happening every single day, there is either:
1. An absorbency issue (not enough boosters) or 2. a fit issue, meaning a gap somewhere (this happens within the first hour of wear) or 3. the cover itself has been damaged (in this case you usually see wetness on the outside of the cover). This occurs due to high temperature during washing or direct sun drying.
A cover itself does not leak, unless it`s damaged. The nappy is the foundation of the system and determines whether or not leaks occur. When a nappy gets too wet, it finds a way out!
Checklist
1. Dawn patrol mini`s and flats have 1 booster added from 3 weeks old. Add a 2nd booster if needed.
2. A flat can take up to 3 boosters. Add another booster.
3. No nappy sticking out of the cover. The clothes will suck out the moisture.
4. Cover and nappy are on snug- no gaps around the legs or waist.
5. No clothes tucked into nappy or cover.
6. Siesta night nappies - the long insert must be folded in 3. Inserts are pulled a bit forward for boys and directly under his bits. Add a booster if there are no dry patches. You will have to boost during winter.
7. Flats - 2 for a night stretch of 5- 12 hours. Add a booster if very saturated.
8. No baby grows over the crotch of fleece covers.
9. Nappies must be washed once before use.
10. Snappit Pro nappies: If the leak happens within an hour/when sleeping on a side, there is probably just a gap. Close the gap by pushing the nappy into the panty line.
11. Boys - physically point the boys bits vertically down with the back of your hand when putting it on. This is very important with a snap in style nappy.
Solutions
Leaking day nappies
If leaking is an issue after 2 - 3 hours day time, then the nappy usually does not have enough absorbency and extra layers need to be added to distribute the wetness. Boosters are the answer. Add 1 - 2 in the nappy cover. Babies wee more in Winter. The first morning nappy under 6 months old needs another booster.
Leaking night nappies
Expect a damp nappy in the morning (all layers will be soaked through to the cover) however if it is soaking wet or leaking, with no dry patches, add another boosters in the cover. You do not need to be changing the nappy at night from 3 months old.
Bottle fed older toddlers: Input = output. Regardless of the type of nappy, it can only handle so much. If nappies are leaking and there are still alot of bottles / a lot being taken in at night, consider dropping the volume in the bottle by 10ml per bottle, per night until baby can manage a smaller amount. This method works very well if done over a few weeks.
Tummy / side sleepers
If the front of the nappy is very wet / leaking, add a booster lengthways at the top of the night nappy to give extra layers upfront.

How to Calm the Crocodile Rolling
Some babies start fighting the nappy change time. This can make things quite challenging however know this - this stage does pass and there are some things you can do to keep baby entertained while you get the nappy on.
So this is what I have personally found to work.
A lot of babies get bored of playing with a plastic toy. Once baby is about 8 - 10 months old: keep a box next to the nappy changing area of things he/she doesn`t normally come into contact with. These things must require some sort of intellectual challenge. The most important part is showing them repeatedly how to do the task (like opening and closing a lid) before attempting the change.
Resist the urge to resort to videos or a phone. This tactic does not end well in the long run. Trying then to stop the screen will be a fight and anything after that kind of visual stimulation will just be boring. What you want is a nappy change to end well with a smiling baby and happy mom. A screen does not result in this.
Here are some things that have worked for us.
A toothpaste flip lid (baby must open and close)
A plastic bottle and screw top lid (baby must learn to screw the lid on and off)
A bum cream flip lid - pass them the bum cream.
An empty syringe (baby must put it back together and pull it apart, repeat)
A toothbrush (take turns to "brush teeth"). An electric toothbrush wins every time.
A hairbrush (take turns to brush hair),
A baby book (that squeaks) - anything that makes a noise is a winner
A long rope or piece of wool
A pair of plastic tweezers - open and close.
Apply a small dot of bum cream on to baby's finger.
Clothes pegs - open and close, peg baby's t shirt, moms t shirt (baby must learn how to open and close)
Empty pens and lids- put the lid on and off
Once babies reach ten months they are generally capable of the things above. There are tons of the above things in a household that baby can figure out. Just look around you.
In addition to the above
Sing a fun song
Tickle baby
Hide below the table/bed/ a book/ your hands and jump up and peek a boo
Play "round and round the garden" on baby`s tummy or hand
Do "this little piggy went to the market"
Make ridiculous sounds with your lips and blow on baby`s tummy.
Be totally silly. Babies love silly moms :)
This really was a game changer for me as my second baby was a crocodile roller and I realized I wasn`t actually paying him the attention he needed at nappy time as I was busy worrying about what was for dinner.. etc and trying to make him sit still.
